How to Apply Product to Your Hair Correctly
The first mistake most people do is use too much product.
Good styling is not about loading your hair up until it stays still. It is about using the right product, in the right amount, and applying it properly.
The aim is simple: make your haircut look better without making it look like you have tried too hard.
Start with less than you think
Begin with a small amount. A fingertip or pea-sized amount is usually enough to start.
You can always add more. You cannot easily take product out once you have used too much.
Rub the product properly between your palms until it feels even.
Do not start at the front
This is where a lot of people go wrong.
Start at the back and work forward. Move through the sides, then the middle, and finish with the front. This gives a much more natural finish.
Work it through the roots
Do not just wipe product over the surface.
Use your fingers to work it through the hair properly, getting close to the roots. This gives more control, better texture and a longer-lasting shape.
Use the right product for the finish
Different products do different jobs. Your Fella barber will be on hand to advice you on the correct product that will work for your hair type and style.
Damp hair or dry hair?
Use product in damp hair if you want a softer, more natural shape.
Use product in dry hair if you want more texture, separation and control.
For most men, dry or nearly dry hair gives the best result because you can see the true shape of the haircut before adding product.
Finish with your fingers
Unless you want a very neat style, fingers usually work better than a comb.
A comb can make the hair look too flat or too perfect. Fingers give more movement, texture and a natural finish.
Once the product is in, shape the hair and then leave it alone. The more you keep touching it, the more the style breaks down.
